Homemade Spring Room Sprays (with Essential Oils!)

Ciao from Italy! As you’re reading this, I’m currently on vacation visiting my sister who is studying abroad. We are having the absolute best time, eating all the pizza and pasta we can muster, and sampling every limoncello in sight. I already can’t wait to write up some new posts with photos, travel guides, and recipes from our amazing trip! Although it is still pretty chilly over here, the sun is shining so we are definitely feeling the spring vibes.

If you’re looking for a simple way to celebrate the changing of the season, I would highly recommend creating your own room sprays with just a few ingredients you might already have at home! Follow along to see how to distill your own water, what spring essential oil blends I have been loving, and how to create your own DIY room sprays below… enjoy!

MAKE YOUR OWN SPRING ROOM SPRAYS WITH ESSENTIAL OILS

You will need:

  • Distilled water

  • Witch hazel

  • Essential oils of your choice (I used lemon, peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus, and orange)

  • 100 ml glass spray bottles

  • Small funnel

How to distill your own water at home

STEP 1: The process of distilling water involves taking regular tap water and heating it to the point where it turns to vapor, then condensing the vapor back into water without any of the minerals (you can skip this step if you have purchased a bottle of distilled water from the store).

To begin, fill a large pot about 2/3rd full of tap water. Set a glass bowl floating on top of the water and turn on the stove to medium heat. Turn your lid upside down and set on the top of the pot so that the dome side of the lid is facing your glass bowl. This is where the water will condense and the upside down lid helps the condensed water to drip right into the middle of the bowl. For faster condensation you can add ice cubes to the top of the lid (as shown below).

Now bring your water to a boil and leave it to do it’s thing for about two hours. At the end of that time I had collected enough distilled water in my glass bowl for my small spray bottles.

Carefully (using an oven mitt), take your lid off the pot and pull out your glass bowl of distilled water. Transfer to a glass measuring cup for easier pouring.

STEP 2: Take the spray bottle top off your first bottle and add your small funnel. I got these cute colorful glass spray bottles from the dollar section of Target, I think they are new for spring!

Your essential oils will be dropped in first. Add about 30 drops of essential oil with whatever combination you would like — I will share my spring oil mixtures below!

Spring Essential Oil Blends

Spring Sunrise: 10 drops of Eucalyptus, 20 drops of Orange

Breath of Fresh Air: 10 drops of Peppermint, 10 drops of Lemon, 10 drops of Lavender

STEP 3: Now fill about 1/4 of your bottle with witch hazel. The witch hazel is used to help the oil and water to combine for a longer lasting scent.

STEP 4: Fill the remaining glass bottle with your distilled water. And give your spray bottle a good shake before you spray!

I used my DYMO label maker to add some cute labels and spring names for my room sprays! I love how the labels look on these colorful bottles :)

This simple project makes the perfect spring addition to your home and the bottles are cute enough to leave on display for everyday use!

Let me know what your favorite essential oil blends currently are for spring, I’m in the market for some new ones. I’m very tempted by this Beaches & Blossoms Blend Set for spring/summer from Plant Therapy — every blend sounds so fun.

Happy Spring! Xo Rachael
