Boozy Shamrock Shake
March is here, and that means spring is just around the corner! But before we get to all the floral prints, sunshine, and Easter bunnies, there is one more important holiday to celebrate! Having lived in Chicago for 4 years, I was very much surrounded by lots of pandemonium on St. Patrick’s Day, with the parade nearby my apartment and the river being dyed green. Do you all have any fun St. Patrick’s Day traditions or ways that you celebrate this Irish holiday?
Well, a very popular tradition for many (myself included) is the annual trip to McDonald’s around this time of year to acquire the infamous green minty Shamrock Shake! This tasty ice cream treat is a cultural icon that dates back to 1970 and has become some what of a cult-favorite.
I have always been a fan of mint ice cream, peppermint and mint chocolate chip are some of my go to choices when picking an ice cream flavor, so I definitely cannot resist the Shamrock Shake hype. This year I decided it would be fun to try to make my own version of this minty milkshake, but give it a boozy spin! If you would like to sample this delightful milkshake cocktail for yourself, you can find the recipe below. Enjoy!
HOMEMADE BOOZY SHAMROCK SHAKE RECIPE
You will need:
Vanilla Ice Cream (3 large scoops)
Milk (1/4 cup)
Bailey’s Irish Cream (1 oz)
Creme de Menthe liqueur (1 oz)
Green food coloring (4 drops)
Whipped cream
Maraschino cherries
(This makes about one 8 oz boozy milkshake cocktail)
STEP 1: Add 3 large scoops of vanilla ice cream to your blender.
STEP 2: Pour in 1/4 cup of milk, 1 oz Bailey’s Irish cream, and 1 oz Creme de Menthe.
STEP 3: Add about 4 drops of food coloring (feel free to add more if you want a more vibrant green color).
STEP 4: Blend until thoroughly mixed through. If the consistency is too runny for you, feel free to add more ice cream for a thicker smoothie consistency.
STEP 5: Pour the blended milkshake into your glass, top with a swirl of whipped cream, and don’t forget a cherry on top!
This is the perfect sweet treat to enjoy this St. Patrick’s Day, no trip to McDonald’s needed.
And of course this goes without saying, but do be aware this drink is alcoholic so it is for 21 and older only! If you are interested in making a version without the booze, just skip the Baileys and Creme de Menthe, increase the amount of milk to 1/2 cup, and add in about 4 drops of mint extract for flavoring :)
I hope you’re getting into the St. Patrick’s Day Spirit, wishing you all a lovely week! Cheers!
