Vinyl Wine Glass Decals For Hosting

If you are a big hostess, I’m sure you will agree that a major pet peeve of hosting is when you end up with a million half drank glasses at the end of a party because everyone set their glass down and forgot which one was theirs. You end up having to wash a bunch of extra glassware and worse, you end up wasting a ton of precious, precious wine.

Well that is where the infamous “wine charm” comes into play. These are usually some kind of distinguishable label or decorative charm that is attached to the stem of your wine glasses to tell them apart.

There are a ton of fun options you can make or buy, but I wanted to come up with a way to differentiate glassware in a cute and unique way. So today I’m showing you how I made these fun vinyl wine glass decals using my Cricut Joy Xtra. And I have a free download of the PNG files below if you want to try out this project yourself!

And if you are looking for other ways to mark your glassware for guests, be sure to check out these other wine charm projects on the blog:

HOW TO MAKE VINYL WINE GLASS DECALS FOR HOSTING

Supplies:

STEP 1: Cut 3” x 3” squares of removable vinyl in whatever colors you want. There are 6 different vinyl decal designs available, but you could also do each design in multiple different colors for more options.

Stick the 3” x 3” squares onto your Cricut mat.

STEP 2: Download ETI’s Vinyl Wine Glass Decal PNG files (above).

STEP 3: Login to your Cricut Design Space software and open a new project. Click “upload” on the left menu and upload each decal image that you want to use individually.

Each time you upload a new image, you will have to go in and manually remove the background so that only the decal shape is remaining. Then convert upload to “single layer”. Once the shape shows up on your canvas, you will want to resize it to be about 2”x2” in size (doesn’t have to be exact, but very close).

Once you have all your shapes uploaded and sized, your canvas will look something like the screenshot above.

STEP 4: Click “Make” then select “on mat” for how you will load your materials. Now you should see an image of your Cricut mat. Move your decal shapes around so they correspond with how you placed your vinyl squares on your actual mat. You will want to choose which shape for which color vinyl by placing it in the correct position to be cut out.

The Cricut Design Space will then ask you to choose your material, which is “Premium Removable Vinyl” and then you will load your mat into the machine and press “Go”! The Cricut machine will begin cutting out your shapes.

STEP 5: Once the machine has stopped and you have unloaded the mat, you can carefully pull off your vinyl squares from the mat.

Use a weeding tool to carefully remove all the negative space of each design, leaving just the decal shapes remaining.

STEP 6: Next, you are going to add a piece of transfer tape to each decal. Cut a piece of transfer tape that is about 2.5” x 2.5” and pull off the paper backing. Stick the clear gridded sticker to the front of your decal. Then use your scraper tool to make sure the transfer tape is fully adhered to your vinyl.

STEP 7: Trim off the extra by cutting along the outline of each round decal shape. You will also want to cut a hole in the middle where the stem of your wine glass sits. If your decal shape has spaces, you can cut a slit into the shape between the spaces. If it doesn’t, you can just cut the slit across the decal shape.

You should be left with these donut shaped decals with a slit in one spot to open and place them around the stem of the glass.

STEP 8: Remove the white paper backing of your decal, careful not to leave any of the design attached to the backing. Open the decal sticker at the slit and wrap it around the stem of your glass. Try to center the sticker as much as possible then press it to the base of the glass.

If your glass has a flatter base, the sticker should go on perfectly flat. If your base is slightly dome shaped, you might have to mess with it to get any wrinkles or bubbles out of the decal. The two ends of the decal design might overlap a bit, but it won’t be too noticeable.

Use your scraper tool again to try to get your vinyl decal to adhere to the glass surface, then carefully pull away the plastic transfer tape on top.

And you should be left with just your vinyl decal design adhered to your glass! I love how these turned out and I love that you could totally theme them to the color palette or design style of your party.

Now your guests have no excuse to forget which glass belongs to who! And the best part is you can just pull off the vinyl decals after the party and your glassware is back to normal.

I hope this project is helpful if you have any more entertaining plans coming up this summer. Or if you are just looking for an excuse to get crafty and break out your Cricut :) Tag me if you try it out! Happy hosting!
